Has biology disproved free will and moral responsibility

I've copied this in its entirety from the latest issue of PNAS July 13, 2010 vol. 107no. 28 E114

Has biology disproved free will and moral responsibility?

In his Inaugural Article entitled “The Lucretian swerve: The biological basis of human behavior and the criminal justice system,” Andrew Cashmore suggests that penal systems based on moral responsibility have to be reformed because science has refuted the notion of free will (1). Brain imaging and other functional neuroscience methods have indeed been used not only to map neuronal covariates to behaviors but also to detect action potentials for simple movements hundreds of milliseconds before the conscious decision to act (2). Genetic factors have been shown to explain at least one half of the interindividual differences in the liability for criminality in different types of epidemiological study designs (e.g., adoption, twins, and family) (3), whereas molecular genetic studies indicate that no single genetic mechanism accounts for more than a couple of percentages of the variance in crime-related phenotypes (i.e., that the existence of one or a few “crime genes” can be discarded) (4). These facts are very useful. We now know that the chances to refrain from criminality are unfairly distributed and partly under the influence of constitutional susceptibility factors. Some of these, such as childhood hyperactivity and lead poisoning, have been identified in population-based epidemiological or clinical studies and may guide preventive efforts. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a scientific endeavor to establish explanatory models and evidence-based, acceptable treatment for people at increased risk of aggressive antisocial behavior. Does it, however, have a bearing on moral responsibility and penal law?
The answer is given by considering the preconditions of science. Covariation does not equal causation. One half of the population variance does not equal one half the crimes or one half of all crimes. The proportion of variance that remains after subtracting genetic effects is by default ascribed to environmental effects, but these cannot be distinguished from randomness or a potential influence of free (i.e., noncaused) volition. As long as the total variance in criminal behaviors has not been explained or a sufficient cause of a crime demonstrated experimentally, all that modern science has shown is that there are constraints to human freedom, which was already recognized in ancient writings.
Nor is Dr Cashmore's stance new. It is rather pre-World War II modernistic, the era when Sweden's first professor of forensic psychiatry, Olof Kinberg, gained the attention not only of a wide international readership in criminology but of Swedish legislators, who eventually dismissed the notion of accountability (referred to by Kinberg as “transcendental rubbish”) and introduced psychiatric treatment as a form of sanction (5). After legal, societal, and ethical drawbacks, legislators still try in vain to disentangle the resulting confusion of science, medicine, and justice, the roots of which are the same as those behind the notorious sterilization campaigns. To the extent that data are interpreted rigorously by the hypotheses they test, science holds unique promise as provider of knowledge about the aspects of the human that may be studied by quantification and models of causation. If abused to address issues that may not be answered by its methods, science becomes scientism, a mere candidate of a worldview.

    Need a hobby.

I get bored very very easily.

I usually have long days in the lab and when I was working out and exercising things there was no time to get bored. But lately, I've been having short days in the lab, a very nice vacation and just preparing for experiments starting sometime next month.

But in the interim, I have nothing to do. I get bored and that leads to annoyance and then I get bored even more. There are only so many shows that I can possibly watch on TV at the same time.

I think I need to get a hobby. Or work more. I prefer a hobby. Photography is one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mehulmvora) but it's a bit difficult to be filler all the time. I tried to take up painting, but the best I can do is use a painting book where the picture is already drawn in; and I still go outside of the lines (Yes, I suck).

Now I'm bored of writing this blog.

    Yield to vehicles...save the planet!

Ok. I love our planet, I love being outdoors, and I try and be as conscientious as I can be for the environment. Sometimes the rebel in me wants to break out and I'll throw a paper wrapper on the street (YES!! OK!!)

There are many parts we can play to make a small difference. Recycle, not use the shower, use 'green' friendly products, use alternative forms of energy, not buy hummers, eat less beans. Ok not that last one. However, there is ONE thing we can do that, in my opinion, is going to make a comparatively greater impact..

    STOP YIELDING TO PEDESTRIANS!!!

    Why?  Ok. Here's my reasoning.

When you stop your car to yield to pedestrians, you're idling your car. Idling is a tremendous waste of gas (here, here, here and probably a lot more). Even though the numbers are very low (some articles cite ~0.2% of all CO2 emissions are from idling cars) that is something. IDLING gives ZERO miles per gallon.

How many gallons do pedestrians burn? NOTHING ! In fact by walking across perhaps in a slightly hurried fashion, they burn a few more much needed calories.

So when I am getting frustrated watching the person crossing over as if walking in a freaking garden on a warm, sunny spring day, don't blame me for wanting to run them over. It's for the good of the planet !

    Resolutions

Not one of those to have resolutions. Everytime I've actually made them, they didn't last for more than 2-3 weeks. So not really making one, but continuing to do what I've been trying hard to do the last 6 months or so.

Reach 150 lbs , eat healthier, drink a bit less (not that it's alcoholism level) and perhaps even try and get a 2-pack abs :)

I like my cousin's resolution better; live by the philosophy "Who the hell cares!" - but don't think that I'd be able to manage.

    100 days..

..to a Kindle? or something ?

So I've decided to go 100 days by cooking and carrying along my own lunch. This should save me around $400, make me eat healthier and perhaps get that Kindle DX :D

It is currently Day 3 !

12-19-2009 Big snowstorm today, so had to stay in. Day 5 successfully completed.

    Bad writing days..

In the last two days, I've composed two bad emails. Bad just because they didn't have the desired effect and that they were both taken in the wrong sense.

This comes back to my earlier post but unfortunately that's how it is. I wish my intended message was delivered but unfortunately it wasn't. Now I feel like a jerk when I probably shouldn't.

Candidness, upfrontness (not a word!) and ambition doesn't help sometimes.

The scariest thing I saw this Halloween.

Forget ghouls, goblins, grim reapers, evil clowns. Most of those are imaginary (all clowns are evil!) What this post is about is very much real and scarier than any costume anyone can think of. It is probably one of the most disturbing things I've watched the last few years.

It is very very disturbing for a number of reasons:
    1. From the trailer : A FIVE year old talks about being saved and that he found Jesus.
    2. Children are being made to pray to a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush
    3. Mother home-schooling her son - " Did you get to the part yet where it says that science doesn't prove anything? And it's really interesting when you look at it that way..."
    4. Children are playing with torchlights in the night, making ghosts stories up, scaring each other, having a jolly good time being children. In walks the camp leader and says "I don't like ghost stories; some of them are fun - but they don't honor God". I'm sure you can imagine how thrilled the kids got with that sort of comment.
    5. Kids are convulsing and crying like they've done murder. Guilt and fear are strong motivators for brain washing. Forget government conspiracy theories for mind control. Indoctrinate a child with religion and he's yours forever.
    6. "Warlocks are enemies of God. And I don't care what kind of hero they were, had it been in the old testament, Harry Potter would've been put to death!!". Cut to a kid with a sad face. (This is old news - you could read more about it here)
    7. Little girl goes up to a group of African Americans sitting by the road and says "If you die right at this moment, where would you go". Guy says "Heaven". Girl says "Are you sure?", "yes". Girl walks aways looking very unbelieving "I think they were muslims".
    8. basically the next 1.5 hours is more on the same lines...
If you've got netflix, blockbuster or can get the movie from somewhere, do have a watch.

Children at that age should be hogging on candy, playing with a ball, doing child-like things. Not wanting to be saved, or in training to become "religious soldiers". One of the little boys in the documentary is a born-leader. He would talk and people would listen. He is now being groomed to 'spread the word of God' and 'lead a revolution'. That's just what we need..training our children to become revolutionaries.

I was very upset watching this. I tried to think back to my childhood. My parents are religious and I'm not. Not in the slightest. I was maybe as a child. But I have made my choices since then. However, I cannot recall even a SINGLE incident when I was told that all other religious beliefs are bogus, and there is only one truth.

Like in this video above, it's bullshit that there are some religions of the sword and some are not.

Thank you visitor # for wanting a part of my thoughts..
