Ok. I love our planet, I love being outdoors, and I try and be as conscientious as I can be for the environment. Sometimes the rebel in me wants to break out and I'll throw a paper wrapper on the street (YES!! OK!!)
There are many parts we can play to make a small difference. Recycle, not use the shower, use 'green' friendly products, use alternative forms of energy, not buy hummers, eat less beans. Ok not that last one. However, there is ONE thing we can do that, in my opinion, is going to make a comparatively greater impact..
STOP YIELDING TO PEDESTRIANS!!!
Why? Ok. Here's my reasoning.
When you stop your car to yield to pedestrians, you're idling your car. Idling is a tremendous waste of gas (here, here, here and probably a lot more). Even though the numbers are very low (some articles cite ~0.2% of all CO2 emissions are from idling cars) that is something. IDLING gives ZERO miles per gallon.
How many gallons do pedestrians burn? NOTHING ! In fact by walking across perhaps in a slightly hurried fashion, they burn a few more much needed calories.
So when I am getting frustrated watching the person crossing over as if walking in a freaking garden on a warm, sunny spring day, don't blame me for wanting to run them over. It's for the good of the planet !
LOL.. i should be wary of crossing Rutgers streets now that you are on the loose... :0
ReplyDeleteinteresting take on climate change btw...
You probably waste more gas waiting at a red signal (>1 minute in some cases), than waiting for a pedestrian to cross (<20 seconds).
ReplyDeleteUnless you are kidding, in which case, good one! :P
Oh I know ! I wish there were no signals at all..but they save lives and don't walk across you like they're out for a stroll or only have 1 leg.
